SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- SonicWALL, Inc., the leading provider ofintelligent network security anddata protection solutions, today announced that DavCo Restaurants, Inc. successfully deployed paired SonicWALL Network Security Appliance (NSA) 4500 firewalls, a Secure Remote Access (SRA) 4200 appliance, 154 SonicWALL TZ 210 firewalls and a SonicWALL E-Class Universal Management Appliance (UMA) EM5000. With the deployment, DavCo will provide network security and secure remote access for its approximately 4,500 employees. Based in Crofton, Maryland, DavCo Restaurants is one of the largest Wendy's franchisees in North America. The company operates 154 restaurants in the Mid-Atlantic region, including Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia.

DavCo selected and deployed SonicWALL after a considering solutions from multiple firewall vendors including Juniper, Fortinet, Watchguard and SonicWALL.

DavCo was looking to speed up its daily point-of-sale (POS) downloads to corporate headquarters for its 154 distributed Wendy's locations. The previous network infrastructure consisted of a private network with a back-office PC at each Wendy's restaurant. An Internet Service Provider (ISP) provided each location with dedicated access to specific white-listed websites only. To become PCI DSS compliant and securely transmit credit card transactions over the Internet, DavCo needed to deploy firewalls at all restaurant sites to ensure they were adequately segmenting and securing credit card data. DavCo deployed paired NSA 4500 firewalls at its corporate headquarters with a SRA 4200 appliance and 154 TZ 210 firewalls in all its Wendy's locations. To centrally monitor, manage and report on all of the SonicWALL appliances, DavCo also deployed an E-Class UMA EM5000 appliance.

"The process of becoming PCI compliant was incredibly challenging and complex," said Stacy Duncan, senior director of IT, DavCo Restaurants. "We needed to ensure good network segmentation and find a solution that could provide seamless, secure and easy-to-manage network security and remote access across the entire distributed network."

Duncan added: "The SSL VPN has been awesome! We were able to implement two-factor authentication using a one-time password sent via text message, resulting in another wall of security for PCI compliance."

DavCo's technology partner, RedZone Technologies, LLC, a specialized IT solutions and security company, was instrumental in the evaluation process. They were also deeply involved in the successful installation and management of the implementation. In final evaluations, SonicWALL and RedZone Technologies conducted a real-world performance comparison of SonicWALL and Fortinet's appliance using nightly batch download traffic at two of DavCo's restaurant sites.

"It came down to throughput," said James Crifasi, CTO at RedZone Technologies. "We wanted to determine the real amount of bandwidth that could be pumped through the devices. SonicWALL proved to be a better fit than Fortinet."

Crifasi continued: "DavCo will be able to really analyze their employees' application traffic. The application intelligence, control and visualization capabilities will allow them to take advantage of any new technologies, such as real-time menu boarding which is bandwidth-latency sensitive."

SonicWALL Next-Generation Firewalls tightly integrate Reassembly-Free Deep Packet Inspection (RFDPI) with high-speed intrusion prevention, file and content inspection, and application intelligence, control and visualization. With multi-core hardware using 8 cores and 6 GbE interfaces for uncompromising protection and performance, the NSA 4500 provides DavCo with an extensive array of advanced networking, high availability and configuration flexibility.

At the restaurant sites, the TZ 210 is the fastest multi-layered unified threat management firewall in its class, featuring 10/100/1000 WAN and LAN ports, a 5-port 10/100 LAN switch, automated 3G or analog failover/failback and optional 802.11n high-speed wireless. The SRA 4200 delivers easy-to-use, secure clientless SSL VPN access to files, email and applications on desktops, servers, or intranets from more remote endpoints, including Windows, Windows Mobile, Mac, Linux and Android devices.
